Junction Jam

ALL ABOARD!! August 15th – 16th, 2026
Junction Jam (Midwest US 2026) is an in-person, 2-day weekend round-trip game jam where jammers starting in multiple cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Kansas City, St. Louis) begin their games on an Amtrak train to Chicago.
Jammers already based in Chicago will start at the same time at a local venue, and as each train arrives, will welcome their traveling peers for an evening event featuring dinner, networking, and more jamming!
The next day, passenger jammers will wave goodbye to their new Chicago friends and get back on the train to finish up their games while returning to their origin cities!
Everybody (as long as you’re 18+) is welcome! Never participated in a jam or ever made a game before? Not a problem! Have 20 years of experience? This trip is for you, too!

Full Itinerary
Saturday, August 15th
7am-10am: All aboard!
- 7am – 9am (various times): Traveling jammers board their trains and depart!
- 10am: Chicago venue (DePaul Center) opens to local jammers.
Once the jam begins for each “spoke,” jammers will watch a short video revealing the jam theme, and on-train/on-site organizers (“Conductors”) will help folks get started. They will also be available to assist and facilitate communication during the trip. The rest of the morning and afternoon is devoted to jamming!
2pm-5pm: Pulling in
Trains carrying traveling jammers will arrive to Chicago’s Union Station at various times in the afternoon. Upon arrival, conductors for each spoke will help guide jammers the few blocks away to the Congress Plaza Hotel for check-in, and then another few blocks to DePaul Center to join local jammers for the evening.
7-8pm: Evening event
Dinner is served! Jammers will take a well-deserved break for pizza and socializing. Jammers will meet and network with peers from other spokes. During dinner, conductors will put on a short presentation with jam highlights so far, and check in with teams to make sure they have what they need.
8-10pm: End of day one
Teams will continue jamming at DePaul Center for a few more hours before the venue closes for the night at 10pm. Jammers have a equally big day tomorrow, so are encouraged to get a full-night’s rest! Volunteers will be available to accompany jammers back to the hotel for the night.
Sunday, August 16th
10am: Dawn of the final day
DePaul Center opens for the day. Local jammers will begin jamming, and traveling jammers will have a few hours to squeeze in some jamming, check out of the hotel, and prepare for their trip home.
1pm – 3pm: Departure
Traveling jammers will board their return trains and depart for their origin cities, jamming the whole way!
5pm: DePaul Center closes
Local jammers don’t have to go home, but they can’t stay at DePaul Center. The jam deadline isn’t until 11pm, so local jammers can continue their projects elsewhere until the other spokes pull into their stations.
7:30pm – 11pm: Final stop
When the last train for reaches its origin city, the jam is over!
The Caboose! (DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED)
The Caboose will be a post-jam joint virtual event where conductors from each Junction Jam spoke will host a local event for their jammers to reconvene and share postmortems on their games, talk about the experience, share feedback, and more.
Each event will be connected virtually, so jammers will be able to see and chat with folks from other spokes, too!
Date/time, locations, and time to be announced!
FAQ
Will there be WiFi on the train?
Probably not. We advise jammers to download all the tools and materials they need the night before, and organizers will have USB sticks with common tools and resources on hand to distribute to jammers in need.
Cell service along the routes is generally available for all major carriers, so you can tether to your phone if you have that capacity, but service may be slow or spotty in certain areas, so connectivity is not guaranteed for the entire route.
Is there a competition, or prizes?
No, Junction Jam is not a competitive game jam. Making a game is hard enough!
Should I have a team or a game idea before the jam starts?
Nope! You may network with fellow jammers ahead of the event, but you are encouraged to come as you are. Conductors will help folks form teams once the jam starts, and make sure that everyone who wants to be on a team is on one.
Likewise, while you are free to prepare project templates helper libraries to help you get started, we encourage you to wait until you have formed your team and learned the jam theme before you start brainstorming ideas.
How do we submit our games at the end of the jam?
Organizers will share a link to an itch.io hosted jam page when the jam begins, and instructions for submitting your game will be made available on the Junction Jam Discord server. Organizers will be on hand to help teams submit their games as the jam ends, but in case of connectivity or site issues you will have a few days after the jam is over to submit your game, so you don’t have to worry about a strict cut-off time during the event itself.
Do I need to make a game to attend?
While the purpose of a game jam is to make a game (or something!), we understand folks may prefer to use the time for networking or other tasks/purposes. Everyone with a ticket is welcome to attend as long as they’re over 18 yrs old and are respectful and considerate of people who are jamming.
Are there rules about what I can make? What OS I should target, etc?
There are no restrictions on format or build targets whatsoever. Make your game for Windows, Linux, web, pen-and-paper, Wonderswan, whatever!
When booking my train ticket, should I choose a seat on the Upper Deck or Lower Deck?
It’s up to you, but if your train gives you the option, we are recommending jammers book a seat on the Upper Deck, so that our group is more likely to be able to sit together. In general when riding on an Amtrak train, the lower deck has a bit less side-to-side movement, while the upper deck has better views and easier access to adjacent cars, so you can take those factors into consideration if they are important to you.
There is no “fasten seatbelt sign” on an Amtrak train, and most trains have dedicated dining and/or observation cars with open seating, so you are always free to move about the train car to talk/work with teammates and organizers.
Register
If you’re starting in
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Kansas City, or St. Louis
You’ll need to purchase three things:
- A round-trip Amtrak train ticket to Chicago (~$120-200).
- A one-night hotel room at the Congress Plaza Hotel (or other nearby accommodations).
- A Junction Jam event ticket ($25).
Purchase all three from this page by following the links below.
The expected total cost for a jammer traveling alone will be $350-400, depending on your starting city and the options you choose. Sharing a hotel room will greatly reduce individual costs, so we encourage you to coordinate with fellow jammers.
If you’re starting in
Chicago
You will be jamming at the DePaul Center event venue the whole weekend, so you only need an event ticket, which costs $25 (before taxes and platform fees), plus a hotel room if you’re not already based in Chicago. Purchase by following the links below.
STEP 0: Join the Junction Jam Discord!
All official communication during (and in advance of) the event will happen on the Junction Jam Discord server. Not only is it the best way to get help from conductors, it’s also great for coordinating with fellow jammers, including forming multi-spoke teams!
STEP 1 of 3: Purchase Train Tickets
If you’re starting in
Minneapolis/St. Paul
Round-trip route on the Empire Builder:

- CHI to MSP (Route 27) – Sun, Aug 16: 3:05pm – 10:56pm
NOTE: Routes 27 and 7 are the same physical train (likewise with routes 28 and 8), so you may select routes 7 and/or 8 instead of 27 and/or 28 if you find that the ticket is cheaper. On this leg of the Empire Builder, there is no difference whatsoever.
If you’re starting in
Kansas City
Round-trip route on the Southwest Chief:
- KCY to CHI (Route 4) – Sat, Aug 15, 7:13am – 3:29pm
